Oklahoma’s #1 Starter Repair
A starter is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The vehicle or piece of equipment’s battery provides electrical energy to the starter through the main battery cable. When the key is in the start position, this applies power to the solenoid switch and engaging the drive with the flywheel. At this point the starter begins to turn the motor over. Once the motor is spinning fast enough on its own power, the drive disengages from the flywheel and the engine is running.
Starter Failure
A lot of starters fail due to low voltage which creates more amps to try to get the starter to motor. The more amps used equals enough heat to burn field coils and armatures.
Starter Repair
When a starter comes into our shop we first check it by motoring it to determine if it needs rebuilt or just cleaned up! If the starter does motor and engage, it can still have a problem. In this case, it’s usually the drive that is bad, at which point we replace the drive. When we open up a starter we first check to see if the two main components are going to ground, then we physically inspect the fields to determine if they can be reused by rewrapping them or replacing them. The armature is then checked and cleaned by turning the commutator to a bright copper color for good brush contact. The shaft and splines are checked for straightness and trueness. We then punch out the old bushings, clean and paint the housings, replace brushes because the copper leads can get very hot making them brittle. The starter is then re-assembled and checked to either meet or exceed OEM standards!
Solenoid Replacement
The solenoid actually takes more abuse than any other component in a starter. After all, that’s what all the power runs through. Years ago, you could replace parts in a solenoid, however, today’s solenoids are designed and made different so it’s virtually impossible to see how bad a solenoid is. We have taken solenoids that work and cut them open to see what damage they have taken. In our findings, we have discovered that the contacts are severely pitted and the copper coil has melted plastic around it and is very discolored. That is why we automatically replace solenoids.
Classic car starters
Most classic cars are operating on starters that are obsolete. It can be almost impossible to buy a brand new replacement. We have the experience and the ability to order the correct parts to repair your obsolete starter, allowing you to keep the vehicle all original.
