Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The guage in my vehicle shows over 16 volts, is my alternator bad?

Not necessarily, but it is likely. If your guage is showing high, that means your ECM is sensing low voltage at the battery and telling the alternator to charge more. When this happens, it usually takes out the regulator and needs replaced.

The Battery light is on in my dash, is my alternator bad?

There is a good chance that when this happens that the alternator has quit charging and needs repaired. There have been a few cases that a fuse has been blown in the fusebox and replacing the fuse fixed the problem.

My vehicle turns over slow and won't start, what's wrong?

First, we suggest that you have your battery load tested. If the battery is good and this is still happening, then one or both of the main components in your starter is failing. Bring the starter in for an inspection and repair.

My vehicle just clicks and won't turn over, is my starter bad?

There is a good chance that your starter is bad. The main power cable runs direct to the solenoid on the starter. When the key is turned to the start position, it pulls a plunger to engage the starter drive. When this doesn’t happen the inner coil of the solenoid is burnt and the solenoid needs replaced.

Why is there corrosion on my battery?

The most common cause of battery corrosion is when hydrogen gas released from battery acid causes a chemical reaction with the metal terminals. Corrosion typically looks like a flaky layer of white or green discoloration that sits on your battery terminals.

It’s important to note the color of the buildup that’s collected on your terminals because different colors can indicate the difference between corrosion and sulfation.

It is important to identify the difference between these two chemical reactions because corrosion can be easily removed as part of a regular maintenance routine, while sulfation typically indicates deeper damage to the battery. When a battery reaches the sulfation stage, the best thing to do is to replace the battery.
