Oklahoma’s #1 Alternator Repair And Replacement

An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy into Alternating Current (AC). Therefore, it is called a generator. It becomes an alternator after a regulator and rectifier are added. The regulator controls the output of the alternator so that it doesn’t burn up. Without a regulator, the alternator would operate at its maximum output and create so much heat that it would boil the vehicle’s battery, and possibly catch the vehicle on fire. The rectifier changes the output current to Direct Current (DC). An Alternator works when the unit spins creating a residual magnetism between the rotor and stator. The amount of amp that an alternator puts out relies on two factors, how heavy the stator is wound and how many amps are required from it for the vehicle to operate.

Alternator Failure

The first reason an alternator fails is because the alternator is locked up or won’t spine. It has either an external or internal fan that keeps the unit cool. As fast as the alternator is turning, it acts like a vacuum pulling everything into it such as air, grass, dirt, oil, and water. Dirt and grass will cause an alternator to seize a unit up by packing tight between the rotor and stator. Water will rust the bearings to the point they will freeze up. Oil, the worst contaminant of all, will cause the components to fail because it is conductive and acts as an acid by eating away at the components.

Alternator Repair

When an alternator comes into our shop, we automatically replace three things, the regulator, the brushes, and the bearings. The other components are electrically tested and cleaned. Housings are washed, buffed, and painted if needed. The unit is then put back together and tested to meet or exceed the original manufacturer’s specifications.

Alternator Wear And Tear

The second reason an alternator could fail is due to poor maintenance. Battery corrosion and bad batteries will cause an alternator to work twice as hard because it senses that it is not putting out enough power to the battery, causing it to put out it’s maximum power.

Customization

We also have the ability to customize a large portion of alternators. This customization can be anything from high output stators, custom paint, and some alternators we can even chrome.
